A “new trend” in Australia could be the introduction of a cranberry sauce in restaurants, a leading food and beverage expert has said.
The “Cranberries” brand of pepper sauce, marketed under the name “Red Hot Red” was made famous in the US by its popularity on the television series, The Sopranos.
A research team led by food historian Dr Matthew Fennell from the University of New South Wales has found that more than 50 percent of the food sold in Australia is made with cranberries.
“It’s not just one brand,” he told the ABC.
“Cranberries, cranberries, cranberry juice, cranley juice, they all have different names, but they all make up a big part of our diet.”
The one brand we’re seeing is really a new trend, and it’s definitely a new product for Australia.
“Dr Fennella said the discovery was surprising, but not unexpected.”
I think we’re all familiar with the fact that cranberries can be a bit spicy, which can be good and can be bad,” he said.”
And I think we know from a lot of other countries around the world that we’ve been eating cranberries for a long time.
“But it’s very much a local thing, so you don’t see a lot in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, South America or anywhere else in the world.”
So it’s really just a case of us seeing it in Australia and doing some research.
“The research also found that a significant proportion of Australian consumers have eaten cranberry sauces in the past.”
